Dr. Walter C. Parker is Professor of Education and Adjunct Professor of Political Science at
the University of Washington in Seattle. Formerly, he was a school teacher in the Colorado public
schools and the social studies department chair at Northglenn High School. His research focuses
on K-12 social studies education and education for democratic citizenship. His books include Renewing
the Social Studies Curriculum (1991), Educating the Democratic Mind (1996), Social Studies in
Elementary Education (2001), Education for Democracy: Contexts, Curricula, and Assessments (2002), and
Teaching Democracy: Unity and Diversity in Public Life (2003). He has authored over 80 book chapters,
journal articles, and book reviews. He is the research editor for the journal Social Education and has
served on the research teams of two recent multinational studies of democratic education. For more
